Understanding Spinal Cord Injuries

Spinal cord injuries can be complete or incomplete. If a spinal cord injury is complete, the cord can’t send signals from below the point of injury, leaving an individual paralyzed and unable to feel any sensations below his or her injury. When a spinal cord injury is incomplete, an individual will have limited mobility and sensation below the point of injury.

With immediate treatment the long term effects of a spinal cord injury can often be reduced. Common causes of spinal cord injuries can include trauma, such as a ski accident, car crash or sports and recreation. Spinal cord injuries can also be the result of a disease such as Spina Bifida or Multiple Sclerosis. Spinal cord injuries can be treated, but the treatment can vary depending on the location or severity of the injury. In most cases, treatment involves extensive physical therapy and rehabilitation.

Bert became a C6-7 quadriplegic as a result of an automobile accident in his youth. His desire to make a positive difference in the lives of people with disabilities led him to establish UroMed as well as creating a free motivational program for peer support and rehabilitation groups that today is known as Life After Spinal Cord Injury.

Have any questions?
Bert will be accompanied by Michael Grimm, a manager for Edgepark & UroMed and can be reached by phone or e-mail: 443-310-7454 or mgrimm@uromed.com.
