UroMed’s founder, Bert Burns, became a C6-7 quadriplegic as a result of an automobile accident in his youth. His desire to make a positive difference in the lives of people with disabilities led him to establish UroMed as well as creating a free motivational program for peer support and rehabilitation groups that today is known as Life After Spinal Cord Injury.

About Magee Rehabilitation Hospital

Magee Rehabilitation offers one of the nation’s leading rehabilitation programs for people with spinal cord injuries (SCI). With more than 4,000 SCI patients in its follow-up system, Magee has the clinical experience and the unique peer resources that no other Greater Philadelphia rehabilitation program can offer.

Since 1978, Magee has partnered with Thomas Jefferson University Hospital to form The Regional Spinal Cord Injury Center of the Delaware Valley. This federally designated model system of care is one of only 14 in the country to provide coordinated lifetime care for people with SCI and their families. Magee’s SCI program is also accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).

Magee’s SCI services include an expert clinical inpatient program; state-of-the-art assistive and therapeutic technology; unique outpatient therapy programs; and community reintegration services. Lifetime follow-up care is coordinated through Magee to address the unique health and community reintegration concerns of people with SCI.  Learn more at:

About Kessler Rehabilitation Hospital

For more than 65 years, Kessler Institute has pioneered the course of physical medicine and rehabilitation.  Today, as the nation’s largest single rehabilitation hospital, we continue to define this field — providing the highly specialized care, advanced treatment and leading-edge technologies that enable individuals with spinal cord injury, brain injury, stroke, amputation, neurological diseases, musculoskeletal and orthopedic trauma, and cardiac conditions to rebuild their lives.

Kessler is one of only eight centers in the country to receive federal designation as a Model System for the treatment and research of both spinal cord injury and brain injury treatment and research, a distinction we hold with the Kessler Foundation.  That same level of expertise and experience distinguishes each of the comprehensive rehabilitation programs offered at our three New Jersey campuses.  Perhaps that’s one reason why U.S. News & World Report ranks Kessler as one of “America’s Best Hospitals” and why, each year, thousands of individuals from across the country choose Kessler for their rehabilitation.  Learn more at:
