LASCI Leads as Largest Online Spinal Cord Injury Support Group Worldwide

lascilogoLife After Spinal Cord Injury [LASCI], the free motivational program offered by UroMed, reached an amazing milestone in August 2014 as the group continues to grow in popularity and membership online.  Today, with more than 35,000 followers on Facebook, LASCI is the largest online support group for people with spinal cord injury — in the world!

LASCI was created in 2010 to help people who use wheelchairs to find more information about motivational speaking programs and other resources that assist with daily living.  With followers online via Facebook and through their extensive blog site, Life After Spinal Cord Injury has been a pioneer for web-based support groups focusing on spinal cord injury.

How LASCI Began

UroMed’s founder, Bert Burns, became a C6-7 quadriplegic as a result of an automobile accident in his youth. His desire to make a positive difference in the lives of people with disabilities led him to establish UroMed as well as creating a free motivational program for peer support and rehabilitation groups that today is known as Life After Spinal Cord Injury.

Burns says, “I am proud of how quickly LASCI has become the largest support group for spinal cord injury in the world and the positive impact it has on the Spinal Cord Injury community each day. LASCI has given us a forum to connect with each other, as spinal cord injury survivors, and the numbers show that people worldwide are inspired and encouraged by the resources that we share.”

LASCI Programs: In-Person and Online

In addition to the daily resources shared via LASCI’s Facebook page, an offline in-person component also exists for the program. As its’ founder, Burns travels on a regular basis to rehab hospitals throughout the United States sharing informative, motivational talks with in-patients, clinical staff, family members and caregivers who assist people with spinal cord injury.

rp_bertwscigroup.jpgWhile presenting, Burns inspires others by sharing his story of winning a Gold Medal in the 1992 Paralympics and how he became a successful entrepreneur. He also gives his perspective on important issues such as:

• Work/School
• Dating
• Sexuality
• Marriage
• Children
• Sports
• Bladder/Bowel Management

Burns says, “I hope to convince people who use wheelchairs that they can still do all the things they want to do and more. They may just have to do them differently.”
