UroMed Sponsors San Antonio Sports 2014 All Can Ski Event at Sea World

allcanski1The 22nd annual San Antonio  Sports All Can Ski is set for August 19, 20 & 21 and will take place at SeaWorld San Antonio on Sea World Lake!  Uromed is a proud sponsor of this year’s outing, contributing scholarships to cover the cost of financially-challenged participants who are members of Rolling Inspirations, a peer support group in San Antonio, TX.

Presented by SeaWorld Cares, the All Can Ski event will offer three full days of skiing. It’s the last week of summer for area schools and the park will be open as well. This year more than 120 adaptive skiers will hit the SeaWorld ski lake!  LASCI founder Bert Burns will also be on hand along with UroMed representatives to assist with the event.

Started in 1992, All Can Ski was created to provide persons with physical disabilities the opportunity to experience waterskiing.  Such disabilities include spinal cord injuries, spina bifida, amputees, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, and multiple sclerosis .

“For so many participants, this is a chance to leave wheelchairs and crutches on the dock and experience the thrill of waterskiing,” said Ross Davis, a Paralympic gold medalist who has coordinated the event since 1995. Special sessions are held just for kids  and for wounded warriors.

Here are some of the highlights from previous All Can Ski events:

Spotlight on Chris Salas, founder of Rolling-Inspirations.org

Quadriplegic Chris Salas created a support group based out of San Antonio, Texas that has a truly given so much inspiration and hope through their network of members and weekly meetings that we wanted to share their story with our readers.

Rolling Inspiration’s mission is to bring together those living with spinal cord injuries to discuss, talk, and learn from one another through positive settings and interactions. The Rolling Inspirations website states: “Our one-of-a kind group to South Central Texas is open to all. Our intention is to educate and encourage those with spinal cord injuries that many things are still possible by sharing stories, participating in group outings, and educating them on what is available in the community. Our group allows people to be inspired by the experiences of others with similar circumstances.”

Rolling Inspiration was born out of a notable need that Chris Salas came across after speaking with new SCI patients. “The counselor  here would keep calling me to talk to people, so I figured I must be doing something right,” Salas said. “It wasn’t so much what the patient got from talking to me so much as the feeling I got talking to them. It kind of inspired me to do it more.” Chris and his will to “not just get by” has inspired so many to do more. Chris’s can do and will do attitude have given many SCI patients a new sense of renewal and determination to follow their dreams and continue to live the life they love.  “Being in a wheelchair is not the end,” he said. “It’s merely a stop and a new mode of transportation on the journey of life.” The group started with just four members, and now has grown to over 20, with new members joining monthly.

Rolling Inspiration is active in their local community, often participating in community events about awareness, accessibility and disability resources. For more information on Rolling Inspiration, visit the website at www.rolling-inspiration.org  or e-mail Chris Salas at chris@rolling-inspiration.org.

ski2Dietzen-Menger Adaptive Water Ski Grant Program
Since 2009, All Can Ski has put skis in the hands of skiers who show potential and have the resources to ski independently. One of the biggest obstacles to skiing independently is the cost of the equipment.

Named after two of All Can Ski’s most committed volunteers, Alan Dietzen and Erich Menger, the grant is designed to provide at least one ski each year to a promising participant.  Contribute to the program here.
