UroMed Supports 5th Annual Kernan Rehabilitation Hospital Adapted Sports Festival

UroMed’s non-profit motivational program, Life After Spinal Cord Injury, is hitting the road this weekend to take part in the University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Hospital’s fifth annual Adapted Sports Festival on Saturday, September  7, 2013 from 9:00 a.m. until 3 p.m.

The Kernan Adapted Sports Festival is dedicated to enabling  individuals of all  abilities to lead active, healthy lifestyles. Participation  in sports and  recreational pursuits helps to make this possible.  Designed as a fun-filled day for individuals with physical  disabilities and  their families, the day will include chances to participate in  hand cycling, boccia ball, wheelchair basketball, a wheelchair slalom  course, and adapted  golf. There will also be a quad rugby demonstration.

Current and former patients, as well as individuals with disabilities living in the community, are encouraged to participate in a range of recreational activities. All activities are supervised by trained staff, taking into account  individual needs and abilities. Equipment can be adapted as necessary   and  patients are encouraged to utilize newly developed skills and techniques acquired through rehabilitation.

Participants in the Kernan Adapted Sports Festival have the opportunity to try a wide variety of sports and games.

LASCI founder, Bert Burns, will also be on hand at the event as a special guest. Burns is a C6-7 quadriplegic who often travels and speaks at LASCI events that take place at community programs nationwide.

Entreprenuer, Clinician, Paralympian, Father of Twins
Bert Burns had no idea that all of these roles awaited him after his spinal cord injury that was caused by a drunk driver.  His path to success started with just one person, a recreation therapist at Bert’s rehab hospital who approached him to talk about wheelchair sports.  Bert initially showed little interest, but the therapist wouldn’t give up. Bert decided to give it a try, never knowing the dramatic, positive impact that wheelchair sports would have on his life.

LASCI: Motivational Events At Facilities Nationwide
Bert’s desire to make a positive difference in the lives of people with disabilities also led him to create a free motivational program for peer support and rehabilitation groups called Life After Spinal Cord Injury. LASCI is sponsored by UroMed and has more than 18,000 members worldwide.

Through LASCI, Bert devotes considerable time as a motivational speaker for children with disabilities, rehabilitation programs, medical education seminars and other community events. Bert explains his reason for reaching out is, “I hope to convince patients in wheelchairs that they can still do all the things they want to do and more. They will just have to do them differently.”

While presenting, Bert inspires others by sharing his story of winning a Gold Medal in the 1992 Paralympics and how he became a successful entrepreneur. He also gives his perspective on:

  • Work/School
  • Dating
  • Sexuality
  • Marriage
  • Children
  • Sports
  • Bladder/Bowel Management

  1. Edna Parola says:

Hello, I was sent this email. I am a spinal cord survivor myself and I wanted to know if this event is being held in Maryland only. I am in the New Jersey state and I would like to know if you have a branch out here or know of other support groups in my area. Please advice, thank you.
