UroMed Sponsors Brian Doughtie as He Races to Erase Multiple Sclerosis

Brian Doughtie is a biking enthusiast!
This year, he is participating in six Multiple Sclerosis charity bike rides across the country as well as several other non-charity rides. The Doughtie support for MS fundraisers is a family affair as his wife, and current UroMed employee, Danielle Doughtie also participates and volunteers at Multiple Sclerosis events throughout the Southeast.

In September, Brian completed the Bike MS: Cox Atlanta Ride. This was his 6th year riding and 5th year as a part of the Shepherd Spinal Center team. As Brian describes it, “The bike ride is through the beautiful rolling hills and countryside of Callaway Gardens and Pine Mountain, Georgia. The route options were 35, 62 or 100 miles on day 1 of the ride. I opted to ride the 62 mile route on Saturday. On day 2 of the ride the route options were either 35 or 65 miles and I choose the 35 mile route.”

Pirates were waiting for the riders at one of the break stations.

All of these races are part of his 50by50 goal.  According to Brian, ” 50by50 is a journey to complete a charity bike ride in each of the 50 states by the 50th birthday. I am currently 39 and have completed rides in GA, TN, FL and AL. The ride in Las Vegas  will be my 5th state and all together my 13th MS bike ride since I started participating in MS rides back in 2006. For my 50by50 goal I am going to try to focus on Multiple Sclerosis charity rides but if there is not a MS ride in a state I need to complete I will do a cancer ride or charity ride for special needs kids.”

Brian chooses MS rides for a reason – his best friend’s wife has MS.

“The idea of 50by50 was sparked by a sermon at Mountain Lake Church by pastor Shawn Lovejoy. The sermon was titled Radiate. That sermon helped me to answer one of life’s greatest questions: What are we here for? It was on that Sunday in September that I realized that I am here to ride, to radiate, to give off my light, per se. I am going to ride in each of the 50 states and raise funds and awareness for Multiple Sclerosis and other charities.”

Brian, who is an able-bodied cyclist, chooses to use a handcycle, which is a modified bicycle with hand pedals instead of foot pedals. Brian explains, “In 2006, Todd Robinson talked me into trying out his spare handcycle that he had. At the time I was working in the UroMed customer service department and Todd was my boss.  I liked the handcycle because it was a different type of bike and it was a great upper body workout. A few months later I was able to purchase a handcycle from Bert Burns that he was not riding. I rode that first bike thru the end of 2011 when I purchased a new kneeler style bike. The kneeler bikes are more suited for an able bodied or non paralyzed handcyclist.”

Brian will complete his 6th charity race at the Bike MS: Vegas Challenge on November 10-11th. If you are in the area, check out the race!
