LASCI Friends Gather in Florida for Spinal Cord Injury Peer Support Events

Earlier this month, LASCI founder Bert Burns – a C6-7 quadriplegic, travelled throughout Florida working with SCI peer support groups at several local hospitals.

His first stop was at the West Florida SCI peer support group located in Pensacola, Fl. This group meets the 2nd Tuesday of every month at 2:30pm in the community room of the rehab hospital, located at 8383 North Davis Hwy, Pensacola, Fl. 32514. Rinda Gray-Astley is the recreational therapist in charge of this reunion group meeting.

During his visit with the West Florida “reunion” group, Bert answered questions about his own experiences with SCI and offered advice to people who are dealing with similar conditions or circumstances.  In this small group setting, 10 people shared their own stories, experiences and issues with the hopes of finding answers to their own questions or encouraging others through their own example.

LASCI’s second stop included a visit to Shands Rehabilitation Hospital in Jacksonville, FL where Bert Burns co-presented alongside Steve Kenny from the Reeve Foundation during an SCI peer support event.  Steve has been injured since 1993 and is a C4. 12 people attended this support group meeting.

The Shands Rehab SCI Peer Suppot group is run by Randy Pullings and his wife, Kimberly.  Angie Griffin, the patient relations representative at Shands, also helps to coordinate their events. For more information about the group, please contact Angie Griffen at 904-244-4427 or vitaliana.griffin@jax.ufl.edu .

This peer support group meets the 2nd Wednesday or every month in the Cherry Birch room of the LRC building at Shands. Located at 655 West 8th street, Jacksonville, Fl. 32209.

We have the ability to meet the simplest to the most complex positioning needs of the end user. In addition, we own a computer-enhanced pressure mapping system to determine the specific needs of those individuals with pressure wounds.

The wheelchair clinic offers the ability to provide an in-depth assessment including trials with equipment. However, in the event that the patient is unable to come in for assessment, a home assessment can be arranged.

The assistive technology specialist will complete an individualized assessment of the patient, complete equipment trials prior to recommendation of appropriate equipment, and involve the participating supplier in the process to expedite delivery.

In addition, our wheelchair services include a complete and thorough evaluation in a timely manner, pressure mapping, equipment trials, final fittings and adaptive equipment training as well as evaluation for manual wheelchairs, power wheelchairs and environmental control units.
