Gabriela McCall Delgado’s We Connect Now Website Ensures Success For All Nations

Editor’s Note: Gabriella McCall Delgado created a website (www.weconnectnow.wordpress.com) for high school and college students with disabilities and gained a grant for seed money to have the website built. She also created freedom within the website, so that other young people could make suggestions about the other features they felt would be beneficial to all who came to the website. Part 5 of a 5 part series.

Gabriela's goal is to connect young people with disabilities and ensure them success in college and beyond.

Gabriela’s goal is to connect young people with disabilities and ensure them success in college and beyond.

“One of the reasons I believed that the website continues to grow, is that we don’t just cover one issue, like finding a college that fits you or finding a scholarship or an opportunity to work while you’re in college,” Delgado explains. “The We Connect Now website also provides career information and has an active blog site that allows people from around the world to connect with each other. Many countries don’t have the resources to find and develop this type of information for young people who need and want educational and career information. Often countries don’t have active programs for disabled people as a whole and not specifically for high school and college students.” In the future, Gabriela wants We Connect Now to be driven by the people who come to the website from all over the world. As she says, “I hope to see the day when more students with disabilities have more access to more information about opportunities that they have to go to college, to stay in college, to graduate from college and to find meaningful employment.” The We Connect Now website includes many activism and informational resources for various physical and emotional problems, assistive technology, legal resources, a wide range of internships and career opportunities to name a few links on the extensive website. The information also includes for example, the Career Opportunities for Students with Disabilities (COSD) at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville that works with over 600 colleges and universities and 500 national employers.

Besides volunteering her time to continue to grow We Connect Now, Gabriela also works with an organization that helps women who are victims of domestic violence in Puerto Rico, her home. Gabriela is one of those special people who’s taken her learning disability to an all together new level of understanding. Because of the challenges she’s faced and the knowledge she’s gained, as she’s worked to be the best she can be, she’s taken the knowledge, skills and information she’s gained through this life journey to help change the world for the better for young people all over the globe.
