Editor’s Note: Gabriella McCall Delgado created a website (www.weconnectnow.wordpress.com) for high school and college students with disabilities and gained a grant for seed money to have the website built. She also created freedom within the website, so that other young people could make suggestions about the other features they felt would be beneficial to all who came to the website. Part 4 of a 5 part series.

“I’m constantly looking for new, relative information that I feel will help young people in high school and college and after graduation,” Gabriela McCall Delgado emphasizes. “The young people who blog on this webpage also make suggestions and bring up topics that help build the information that the website provides.”

Another unique feature of We Connect Now is that it crosses language and international barriers. Young people in countries all over the world are looking for the same type of information that Gabriela started searching for years ago.

By developing a website that allows any individual from any country in the world to come there and plan his or her future, Gabriela’s website We Connect Now has gone global.

Think about how this young lady from Puerto Rico with a learning disability has impacted and changed the world. Gabriela has tried to overcome the isolation and lack of information that many young people with disabilities face today. Although Gabriela may or may not ever travel to China, South Africa, Spain, Taiwan or the United Arab Emirates, she’s found a way to connect with young people in those countries and many more and to enable them to find a way to meet others with disabilities.

They also learn how to others deal with many of the associated problems, including: “Can I go to college? Can I get a scholarship? Will there be other people at this school to whom I can relate? Can I get a job at school to help pay for my education? What type of job opportunities will I have once I graduate? How many colleges or universities fit my special needs? Do other people understand how I feel, what I want to do with my life, or how I can accomplish that?” Gabriela recognized this need at a very young age and began to address the needs of a specific group of young people in high school, college and immediately after college.  She found a worldwide audience of people willing to share and help one another.
