Editor’s Note: Because of Gabriela McCall Delgado’s interest in and dedication to making more young people with disabilities aware of scholarships, job opportunities and colleges that provide clubs or organizations, Gabriela, the creator of the website (, has developed some opinions about how colleges and universities can do more to increase the graduation rate of these students. Part 3 of a 5 part series.

Gabriela stayed at Juniata College for a year, but then decided she wanted a bigger school experience. “My dad had gone to LSU, so I had a connection there,” she explains. When she went to LSU, she decided to major in philosophy with a concentration in religious studies. She received the Bengal Scholarship that is awarded to the children of LSU alumni who maintain a certain GPA, and she still continued to work voluntarily on the We Connect Now website. Today, people from the United States and 81 other countries use this website.

Gabriela has taken the idea that she had back in high school a step further and has included the people who come to this website in helping to develop the type of information that young people with disabilities want to know. “Through this webpage, I’ve learned that the graduation rate for young people with disabilities is not as high as it is for other groups of people,” Gabriela explains. “I believe that this can be greatly increased, if there was some type of club or organization that they could join with other students. I believe that the career service departments in colleges need to do a better job of listing job opportunities for students with disabilities, so that these students can find places to work, while they attend school. I think all the different departments in colleges need to find a way to work together to help these special students.”

Gabriela’s concept is that there doesn’t need to be one special office or department dedicated to the idea of helping students with disabilities. Instead, she believes that all the offices and departments that relate to students with disabilities in a college or a university setting, should be aware of the needs of special students and work together to make sure these students reach their potential and graduate.
