Sixth, seventh and eighth graders at Dawson County Middle School in north Georgia had some very special visitors today as Julie Tobias, UroMed Sales Support Manager, and Marcy Weatherford spoke to them during Career Day about career opportunities in the HME/DME field.

Julie and Marcy shared their experiences in working with patients as a medical supply provider, explaining to students that this might be a good career option for those who want to help people but don’t want to work in a traditional hospital setting.  “The medical industry isn’t just comprised of doctors and nurses, broken bones and surgeries,” Julie said. “There is a whole other aspect of serving people with medical needs and disabilities through what we do.”

Students asked a variety of questions about the kinds of people that UroMed serves after Julie and Marcy mentioned that UroMed provides intermittent catheters and other medical supplies to people with chronic conditions like Spinal Cord Injury, Spina Bifida, Multiple Sclerosis and Transverse Myelitis, or to those who have recently undergone surgery and are currently using catheters.

One student asked if we help take care of military individuals who have been hurt in the line of combat. “I was proud to say that yes, UroMed does help a variety of combat veterans with monthly medical supplies, and that I believed this is my way of being able to thank those veterans for their sacrifices for our country,” Julie added.

The kids all joined in on the conversation when Julie and Marcy began talking about the huge impact that technology has had on serving patients, whether that means electronic health records or using social media as a means of providing additional resources and support to the people we serve.

“Facebook was our connecting point with the classroom, they all think Facebook and Twitter are cool,” Julie laughed.  “And we think it’s cool that UroMed can use social media to be a support system and advocate for the people we serve, and to offer online resources that help people connect with other families in similar situations.”

The best question of the day came spontaneously as one student asked, “Do you love your job?”

Julie replied, “Yes, I do love working at UroMed because at the end of the day, I know that I’m impacting families in a positive way and lessening their burdens in whatever capacity we can while serving them.”
