Courtney and Katelyn Gower–Two Sisters with Spina Bifida Run, Jump and Play Thanks to Arnold Palmer Hospital

Editor’s note: It is always a good thing to see families adopt children into stable homes. Stable homes with supportive parents, fun siblings and love. Courtney and Katelyn’s adoptive parents had a love so strong that they were willing to take the girls into their family even though both children have Spina Bifida and require a significant amount of medical assistance. The Gowers will provide the girls with whatever they need, and are a healthy, happy family in large part due to the Arnold Palmer‘s Hospital for Children’s dedication and compassion.

The Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando, Florida believes in treating each patient with respect and as an individual. They provide compassionate healthcare with an approach that best suits the patient and his or her family while holding a rank for one of America’s best children’s hospitals with the U.S. News and World Report. With the most advanced technology, stress free environment and extensive medical specialties, families like the Gowers have wonderful experiences and happy, thriving children.

UroMed’s North Florida Sales Representative Nicole Walker works with clinicians at the hospital and also serves on the board of the local chapter of the Spina Bifida Association.  Walker is a strong advocate and supporter of everything that Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children does for its patients. Walker makes an appearance in the video hugging and playing with Courtney.

Courtney and Katelyn were adopted from China within the past few years into the Gower family. Although they are sisters now, they are not biological and both happen to have Spina Bifida. Both girls had their initial surgeries in China, but had their spinal cords de-tethered when they were already in the United States. In the YouTube video shown, the nurses mention that the medical records were sent in Chinese. They laugh and smile about it–showing their willingness to work with Courtney and Katelyn despite extra steps to translate.

Nicole Gower, Courtney and Katelyn’s mother states in the video that the nurses were absolutely fabulous and always treated the kids with respect. At the end of the day, clinicians discuss each child as a whole–each child is more than just a patient. The employees do a wonderful job of following the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children’s mission and values and the children’s bill of rights. It is evident because Courtney and Katelyn are so happy and confident in the video as they talk about Spina Bifida and run around full of joy.

Nicole Gower believes that the care her daughters have received will allow them to do anything they set their minds to.  Nicole’s sons, Andrew and Jacob are proud of their sisters and happily boast the fact that Katelyn is successfully taking gymnastics classes and Courtney can run, play and jump despite an AFO foot brace. However, nobody knows if the girls will remain ambulatory for the rest of their lives, but the Gowers are optimistic and trust in the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children to always give the best care and support to Courtney and Katelyn Gower.
