Team Gabriel hits the road to raise Spina Bifida Awareness!

UroMed and Life After Spinal Cord Injury hit the streets again last weekend as we sponsored and participated in the Spina Bifida Association of Central Florida (SBACFL)’s annual Walk N Roll.  UroMed sales representative Nicole Walker is on the board of SBACFL and works as a strong advocate for children with Spina Bifida.

UroMed's Nicole Walker and Dr. Swana work together every day to help children with Spina Bifida who live in Central Florida.

The weather was a little iffy but smiles were in full effect as kids, parents and caregivers joined forces to raise awareness of Spina Bifida in Central Florida.  Hope you enjoy some of the pictures from the event!

The Center of Disease Control (CDC) now estimates that over 166,000 Americans are affected by Spina Bifida.

Spina Bifidia is the most common permanently disabling birth defect in the United States. It occurs when the spine of the baby fails to close during the first months of pregnancy.

The effects of Spina Bifida are different for each person but often include paralysis. There is no known cause, or cure, because the nerve and spinal damage is permanent.

Did you know:

Each day in the United States, an average of 8 babies are born with Spina Bifida or a similar defect of the brain or spine.

    • An estimated 166,000 people with Spina Bifida currently live in the United States.
    • Hispanic mothers are 1-1/2 times more likely to give birth to a child with Spina Bifida than non-Hispanic Caucasians.

The Spina Bifida Association of Central Florida (SBACFL) has a dedicated group of families and individuals with Spina Bifida, professionals and community volunteers, working to provide resources, educate, network, advocate and to bring about public awareness of Spina Bifida and folic acid’s role in reducing the risk of having a baby with Spina Bifida.

The SBACFL board decided to motivate people to raise money to reach their goal by asking every member of the board to spray paint their hair if they raised $50,000. Which they did! It was all for a great cause.
