UroMed Sponsors AAASP Mustangs Wheelchair Team in Atlanta’s Jingle Jog 5k

A dedicated group of young wheelchair athletes, the YMCA Mustangs, took on the 23rd Annual Jingle Jog 5k [ http://www.jinglejog.com/index.shtml ] in Atlanta on December 11, 2010.  UroMed was honored to sponsor youth participant Joshua Joines from the Mustangs team as he participated in his first 5k using a racing wheelchair.

Joshua does not require a wheelchair to get around on a regular basis, but because of his specific disability, he wasn’t able to keep up with his teammates in regular t-ball and basketball leagues.  As his teammates began to get better and faster, Joshua just couldn’t be competitive.  Even though his teammates and coaches were very supportive, Joshua recognized he was becoming a liability to his team because of his disability.  Sadly, he decided that he did not want to play those kinds of team sports anymore.

However, a friend told Joshua about the American Association of Adaptive Sports Programs and the teams they have in the Atlanta area.  He asked his parents if he could try out for a local AAASP team – the YMCA Mustangs, and they were very encouraging.

The great news is not only was he able to compete, it turned out that Joshua was one of the best players out there.  His father, Jason Joines says, “This team has done so much for his self confidence that he is almost not the same person!  He now talks about playing for Blaze Sports and the possibility of playing on the college level.”

UroMed is so proud of Joshua for successfully completing his first wheelchair 5K and we hope that he will continue his sports career for a very long time!  If you would like to learn more about AAASP youth sports programs, please visit http://www.adaptedsports.org/.

  1. Correction: The name of the organization is American Association of Adapted (not “adaptive”) Sports Programs. Thanks to Uromed for their kind support of these important for students with disabilities. It is companies like YOURS that make a real difference.
